About DIGICURE:Ukraine
DIGICURE:Ukraine provides expertise and a training programme in digital heritage documentation for critical data collection and preservation of threatened cultural heritage. The project brings together heritage professionals from Sweden and Ukraine for knowledge transfer and network activities.
As a result of Russian aggression, more than 350 sites of cultural significance have been deliberately and systematically destroyed in Ukraine. The destruction of heritage is a conscious action to erase history and weaken a people’s connection with the past, paving way for appropriation and misinformation. A challenge facing Ukraine and European allies after the war is rebuilding. As has been demonstrated in recent times, not least with the reconstruction of Notre Dame, having access to digital documentation of a high quality for rehabilitation and reconstruction of built heritage greatly eases this burden.
In Sweden and Europe, national councils for the protection of cultural heritage have been established to facilitate the contingency planning for cultural heritage. In parallel with the development of actions for physical protection and safe keeping of heritage, there are several European Union-funded initiatives for digital preservation of monuments and artifacts such as The Cultural Heritage Cloud and Europeana. Recognizing that digital availability of cultural heritage is of great importance, not least as a preparedness measure but also as a resource for reconstruction, the Swedish government is annually investing SEK 20 million to secure cultural heritage through the digitization of archive and object collections at state museums, other state operations and state-supported operations.
While Western European countries have come further through training programmes and state support, the networks are still forming and the field is young. This is therefore an opportunity for Ukraine to start initiatives that brings them to the forefront. The project therefore aims at establishing a training programme and a Centre of Excellence in digital heritage documentation for critical data collection and preservation of threatened cultural heritage.
The project was funded for the period 2025–2026 by the Swedish Institute.
